Studio Bagan is supporting Helena Cing Deih Sian with a workshop in the context of the exhibition “We are the seeds: the art of Myanmar’s Spring Revolution”.

The workshop "how to re:member" deals with the broad field of memory culture in Myanmar, especially with the role of cultural heritage. We look at "heritage" as a social practice of groups and communities through which meanings and legitimacy of certain historical and cultural narratives are negotiated. Building on this, we will critically discuss aspects of diversity and inclusion regarding heritage-making in Myanmar and in other contexts we know.

The starting point for our discussions will be the sites of cultural significance or civic spaces in Yangon selected by Helena Cing and exhibited in "We are the seeds". Places that are either already designated cultural heritage sites or to which Helena Cing has attributed new layers of meaning, so-called "counter-narratives”. As part of her research project, she gathered insights on these civic spaces with the help of contemporary witnesses of the past decades of political unrest. These civic spaces with their new narratives give us an impulse to think about how we (want to) remember as communities? Whether all memories are worth preserving and which memories should be handed down.

The aim of the workshop is to think further about Helena Cing's exhibition project, to explore new layers of meaning through participants from Myanmar and new perspectives on the Civic Spaces through all other participants, and to continue expanding and diversifying their cultural meaning.
